Honoring Our Citizen Soldiers and Veterans

Jefferson Barracks has been an active military post for over 200 years. Since 1946, the southern portion has served as a major Missouri National Guard base, with historic buildings lining the original parade ground. The site is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is home to the second largest Veterans' Cemetery in the U.S., established in 1866 and spanning over 300 acres.

Also located on the grounds is the St. Louis VA Medical Center – Jefferson Barracks Division, offering psychiatric care, spinal cord injury treatment, geriatric services, and support for homeless veterans.

The northern section is now Jefferson Barracks County Park, maintained by St. Louis County since 1950. It covers 426 acres and features historic buildings, museums, and hosts events like 4th of July fireworks, military re-enactments, and summer concerts.

In 2006, the Jefferson Barracks Heritage Foundation (JBHF) began restoring the historic Red Cross Building at 96 Worth Avenue. Built in 1942, the building has served many roles, most recently housing the Honor Guard for funerals at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Restoration was completed in 2007, and it now serves as JBHF headquarters and home to the Wall of Honor.

Future plans include expanding the building to feature new parlors celebrating the Citizen Soldier, honoring the Buffalo Soldiers, and housing an extended Ulysses S. Grant Library. Long-term goals include restoring more historic buildings to further expand these themes.

JB Heritage Foundation Projects

Preserving history and honoring heroes for future generations.

Phase One

We’re launching the first phase of our historic preservation effort — transforming the 1.1-acre greenspace behind 96 Worth into a thoughtfully designed pedestrian plaza. This inviting, landscaped area will be fenced for serenity and security, and will feature interpretive displays honoring significant moments in U.S. military history.

Phase Two

Advancing our mission to educate and inspire future generations, this next phase centers on the renovation and adaptive reuse of the historic building at 96 Worth Road, fronting the newly designed greenspace. Once complete, the building will feature office space, meeting rooms, and curated historical exhibits—serving as a dynamic hub for learning, research, and community connection.
